Necessities
Did you know that 13.2% of
lives in Thailand live below the poverty line? It may seem like a small
percentage, but that’s almost 9 million people! A girl named Shameela and her
family try to survive below that poverty line. Shameela is a girl with no
nationality because her mother fled Burma because of the military regime. Even
though Shameela was born in Thailand, the mother was just an immigrant which makes her stateless. They
live in Mae Sot, Thailand, in a swamp in the jungle and share a toilet with 100
other people in the village. She lives in a small shack made out of old metal
sheets with a hard tile, wood floor which is where her whole family sleeps,
herself included. Shameela does any odd jobs that she can find to support her
family. She would try to get a better job but she is only 5 years old. She’s
the only child, out of 3 older siblings, to go to school. This child has three
needs. She needs a much better home, financial support, and schooling for her
family.
The first necessity Shameela needs is a better home. Shameela’s home is unfit to even call a home. It is actually a shack with metal sheets as walls and a roof. It is only held up by damp wooden posts. Why the wooden posts are damp is because the metal sheets have holes in them and the house leaks excessively. The whole family sleeps on a hardwood floor with only a pillow and a blanket each. If Shameela and her family do not receive a good home, than they would have a greater chance to get sick. Especially since they only share one toilet with 100 other people. A good home would provide heat when it is cold, a greatly reduced chance of Shameela and her family getting sick and a better place to sleep other than a floor.
The second necessity Shameela doesn’t, or at most, barely has is financial support. Of course, not just money to last for a while, but a job for her family. Money will help buy her proper clothing, food, water, and many more things she needs. A 5 year old child should not have to get a job, but a child needs a good life. Which is what Shameela does not have. Financial support will help her whole family live a proper life. When a person gets money, it will last a while (depending on how much). But when someone gets a job they can have a financially stable life for a long period of time, hopefully for the rest of their lives. Shameela and her family need this stability in their lives and you could help.
The third necessity Shameela needs is schooling for her family. This will help Shameela and her family have a better future. Shameela’s 3 siblings don’t go to school but they need to in order to get a better job. Without education you will most likely get a low-paying job with no benefits. With education the family could get high paying jobs with many benefits and maybe even insurance for their health and well-being. Shameela also wants to become a nurse when she gets older so that means that she needs to go to medical school which costs a lot of money. Without education, the whole family will have a low paying jobs, putting the family under the poverty line.
These three needs are Shameela’s most important needs but not all of them. With your help, you could not only help provide or fix these problems, you can fix her other needs, too. Even though Shameela needs help, but so do other children in her situation. Can you imagine that there are many children in third world countries that have even worse or the same type of problems? Sometimes, it could be in your own neighborhood. Even though you are just one person, or only have a little bit of change to spare, you could still help. If everyone in the world donated $25, we could end extreme poverty in the world! It’s hard to begin standing up for a cause, but people have already started. All you need to do is join!
